Why is the symbol @ used in email addresses?

An email address identifies a location to which email messages can be delivered. The first electronic mail delivery engaging two machines was done in 1971 by Ray Tomlinson, a programmer at Bolt, Beranek and Newman, an engineering company in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He needed a way to separate, in the email address, the name of the user from the machine the user was on. He wanted a character that would not, under any conceivable circumstances, be found in the user’s name. He looked down at the keyboard and chose the @ sign among various punctuation marks available on his Model 33 teletype keyboard. He had no idea that he was creating an icon for the wired world. Today, email is the most used application on the internet. Each email account has a unique address. A general format for an email address is: username@computer_name . The part before the @ sign is the local part of the address, the user name of the recipient, and the part after the @ sign is the domain part which is a host computer name.

Firefox for Mobile Now Available on Nokia’s Maemo Platform

Firefox is now available for Nokia’s Maemo platform. Starting today, Nokia N900 owners can enjoy many of the same Firefox features they know and love on the desktop on their mobile device.

Bringing Firefox to mobile devices is the next step toward fulfilling Mozilla’s mission of providing one Web that everyone can access, regardless of device or location. Secure, powerful, and customizable, Firefox is the most modern mobile Web browser available and is optimized for a mobile experience. Key design principles are at the heart of the mobile browsing experience including minimal typing, seamless synchronization with desktop Firefox and the ability to take your Firefox with you, to name a few.

Firefox for mobile is packed with the favorite features, including:

  • Awesome Bar – Go to your favorite sites in just a couple of keystrokes with intelligent and personalized searching
  • Weave Sync – Sync your Firefox tabs, history, bookmarks and passwords between your desktop and mobile device for a seamless browsing experience

Add-ons like AdBlock Plus, URL Fixer, TwitterBar, language translators, and geo guides become especially handy when you’re out and about on your mobile device. You can both discover and install add-ons directly from your Nokia N900. There are currently more than 40 Firefox add-ons available for mobile and the number is growing every day.

Firefox strongly recommend that you install the YouTube Enabler add-on from within the Add-ons Manager.  Tap on the install button, restart Firefox, and you’re all set to watch YouTube videos.

Oracle buys Sun, becomes hardware company

Oracle announced Wednesday it completed its acquisition of Sun Microsystems in a deal valued at more than $7 billion, a move that transforms the database and business-software giant into a hardware company as well.

Redwood Shores, Calif.-based Oracle has acquired several large companies in its drive to out-consolidate rivals in the business computing technology market, sometimes launching hostile takeovers and sometimes prevailing over regulatory objections. This time, the difficulty was persuading European antitrust regulators who were concerned about the fate under Oracle of the open-source MySQL database software business that was part of Sun.

How to turn on the Drupal site from maintenance?

If you encounter ‘site off-line’ message while accessing a Drupal driven website, you can turn it on by running the following query in the database:

UPDATE variable SET value = 's:1:"0";' WHERE name= 'site_offline';
DELETE FROM cache WHERE cid = 'variables';

The orthodox way to turn it on via Admin panel is:

Go to administer » settings (admin/settings)
Then, Administer » Site configuration » Site maintenance (admin/settings/site-maintenance).

On the page, set Site status to Online.

How to prevent restore & recovery of deleted data ?

Just deleted a file and it went to ‘recycle bin’. Then emptied ‘recycle bin’ and that file is deleted forever, is it? Well, that ’so-called’ deleted file can still be recovered using specialized recovery software.

So, how to prevent restore and recovery of deleted data? How to make sure deleted files are ‘deleted’ in real without any possibility of recovery? ‘Prevent restore’ is an easy to use free application that is answer to above questions.

This application will overwrite all free space on your hard disk(s) that can contain fragments of deleted files with the random data to avoid any possibility of recovery. While writing “Prevent Restore” fills out information to the end of each cluster, leaving no chance to restore.

After the install, run this program for prevent restore wizard. Select one or all drives for ‘prevent restore’ procedure. Then select type of procedure to replacedeleted files among: replace with random characters or with spaces or with random digits.

This application will work on hard drive data and overwrite ’so-called’ deleted data to prevent it from any future recovery. More data and bigger hard drive size will take more time for the process to complete. Download ‘prevent restore’ [2.2MB – Windows, XP] and avoid anyone to lay hands on your deleted data!
